FAQ
How do I determine if I should repair or replace my old equipment?
In making your decision, you should keep in mind the following factors:
-
The age & life expectancy of your current system
-
The energy efficiency of your current system
-
The overall condition of your current system
-
The frequency of your system’s operation
-
The operating cost & energy savings available with new (i.e., new systems are typically 20% to 40% more efficient than equipment 10 years or older)
What are the EER and the SEER ratings?
Both of these are standardized measures of the operating efficiency of cooling equipment. EER ratings are commonly found on window air conditioners and specifically indicate the equipment’s “energy efficiency rating”. SEER ratings are typically found on central and split cooling systems and designate the “seasonal energy efficiency ratio”. Both ratings tell you how efficiently the unit uses electricity. In simplest terms, the higher the rating, the more energy efficient the equipment is and the greater the energy savings available. US regulatory agencies now require new cooling system models to be rated @ 13.0 SEER or higher. Most currently available models range from 13.0 to 16.0 SEER.
What’s the significance of the Energy Star designation?
The Energy Star designation has been created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a means of identifying equipment that meets its standards for high-efficiency & energy savings. Most important from the customer’s standpoint is that Energy Star designated equipment represents a good investment in that it results in lower utility bills.

How can I reduce allergens in my home?
Using a cooling system with an anti-allergy enzyme filter will result in a significant reduction of pollen, spores, dust, smoke, etc. commonly found in homes and businesses. This equipment generates cleaner and fresher indoor air with a net reduction in allergens present. RMI offers this type of equipment in selected models.
How long can I expect my new cooling system to last?
Modern day cooling equipment typically lasts 10 to 13 years when properly protected with regular preventative maintenance. Its also important to understand, that as equipment ages, its efficiency can decrease resulting in higher operating cost. This is one more reason preventative maintenance is critical as it can prolong the equipment’s life and reduce some loss in operating efficiency.
What will be covered in my warranty?
For Residential air conditioning units, RMI provides a 1 year warranty on labor and the manufacturer represented by RMI provides a 2 year limited warranty on parts. Separately, the compressor is warrantied for 6 years. Under these agreements, replacement parts that fail in normal use & service will be provided at no additional charge during the warranty coverage period. For Commercial units, contact RMI for warranty coverage information.

What routine maintenance will be required following the installation of my new cooling system?
We highly recommend a regular schedule of preventative maintenance to safeguard your equipment, extend its life and preserve its operating efficiency. Ideally, your Residential system should be serviced by a qualified technician once or twice per year and also have its filter cleaned or changed every 3 to 6 months. For Commercial Systems, we recommend service every 1 to 3 months including having the filter cleaned or changed. Your RMI technician can advise you on the specific maintenance frequency and procedure that is recommended for your particular equipment.
