SELECTING YOUR EQUIPMENT

Question:
What are the alternative types of cooling systems available and the pros and cons of each?
Answer:
System Type: Ductless Split System Air Conditioning
Pros:
  • Lower installation cost versus central air system
  • With the compressor outside, its more quiet and efficient than a window unit
  • More flexibility in unit placement within home interior
  • No more wasted energy cooling unoccupied rooms
  • Eliminates the need to install ducts
  • Without ducts, avoids the energy loss of central air systems
Cons:
  • Requires professional installation vs. window unit that can be self-installed
  • More expensive equipment cost than window unit
  • Refrigeration and drain lines are visible on the exterior of the building
  • May require more equipment than a central air system
System Type: Ducted Central Air Conditioning

Pros:

  • High average efficiencies
  • Equipment is out of sight within the building interior
  • Better air distribution per room with added vents
  • More quiet indoors
Cons:
  • Higher installation costs
  • Requires professional installation of ductwork
  • Cooling of unoccupied rooms wastes energy
Question:
How do I select the right cooling system?
Answer:
There are a number of factors you need to consider in choosing your cooling system. The primary issues you should take into account are:
  • Make sure the system is properly sized for your needs.
Your air conditioner contractor should provide you with a “cooling load calculation” for your home or business to assist you in this regard. A common rating term for air conditioners is the ton which equals 12,000 Btu per hour. The specific size of your cooling system will depend upon: the size of your building; its number of windows; its degree of shade; its level of insulation; and the amount of heat generated within it. As a rule of thumb, in Hawa ii 50 Btu per square foot of space is required. RMI can assist you in determining the exact size you need.
  • Consider the specific comfort issues important to you.
These can include a desire to reduce allergens due to persons with allergies, the need to control room-to-room temperature variation, etc.
  • Establish your budget parameters
Take into account the equipment’s cost, its installation expense, its warranty coverage, its life expectancy and the cost to operate it.
  • In evaluating your options, review the alternative equipment’s Operating Cost efficiency & SEER Rating
  • Ensure that the cooling system you ultimately select has specifications which are tailored to Hawaii’s climate rather than to that of the Mainland US.
